I was deeply drawn in when I first set my eyes on Kate MacDowell’s phenomenal work! So surreal and fresh, delicate yet dark – natural yet distorted. The detail in her creations is simply amazing and the symbolic visual language used very powerful!

I was thrilled when I received an email from Andrew Smith introducing me to his mind blowing artwork! Old and abandoned items such as gears, wires, springs, junk yard scraps and all sort of mechanical parts & equipment are ritually collected by the artist and used to assemble imaginative and captivating kinetic sculptures.

Anna-Wili Highfield is undoubtedly entering the top list of my favorite artists. Her paper creatures are like poems, they’re so visually attractive, you can definitely feel the magic!

Anna is based in Sydney and makes animal sculptures from paper and copper pipe. Her figures require both her artistic vision and a definitely challenging procedure in means of craft and technique.

A portfolio I strongly suggest you check out!

Contemporary mixed media artist and sculptor Gilles Barbier creates installations that are destined to make us skip a heartbeat. Surreal, bold and provocative, his human formed characters are found in situations that may seem exaggerated but, from my point of view, are meant to trigger our awakening and realization of our, some times, ill natured human behavior.

I also found this video where a curator talks about one of Barbier’s sculptures entitled: “In the soup, a cheddar fondue and three nightmares, speech bubbles (tenant & owner), isolated segments (the infinite assassin) and bananas.”

Derek Weisberg’s sculptures overwhelm you with their raw emotional power. The artist notes in his statement: “I create works of art that are emotional and psychological self-portraits. Through my work I aim to make sense of my life, my experiences, and the times I live. I do not wish to represent like a photo, instead to achieve an innerness. My goal is to create images, which are accessible and allow the viewer to have an experience which can not be easily articulated, but felt. Simultaneously igniting contemplation, reflection and a lasting relationship with the work. I attempt to express basic human qualities, which are universal and timeless. At its core the works reflect humanist ideology; searching for truth and universal morality based on the commonality of the human condition.”

Check out his site as there are so much more incredible pieces waiting to be discovered.

The work of Sabi Van Hemert, a Dutch artist certainly doesn’t remain unnoticed! Strange creatures, a fusion between child and alien, these surreal sculptures provoke a variety of emotions to the viewer due to both their originality and directness.

“For weeks, with great patience and discipline, I cut, paste or prick, following self-imposed rules such as, “all forms in the same rhythm” or “all lines continue onward”. This precision, and the particular materials I choose, help to give my work its alienating yet sensual, tough yet vulnerable character.”

Ivan Prieto’s work got me searching for words. His surreal sculptures appear distressed, sad, often hideous to the eye. Their deformations reminds us of our own aches, pains and weaknesses that accompany us in life.

The artist lives and creates in Spain. He blogs here.

Inspiring and breathtaking are the detailed paper sculptures by Noriko Ambe that focus in observing the alteration of dynamic shapes and spaces.

A very interesting statement by the artist: “So to speak, I have been mapping the mysterious land between physical and emotional geography. I want to attain something sublime. The entrance of the way is detail. The detail is the key point of nature, and we are part of nature. Even though the actions are simple, I do not try to draw / cut mechanical or perfect lines in my work, for subtle natural distortions convey the nuances of human emotions, habits, or biorhythm. For this reason, I take care to make all works by hand.

When I am drawing or cutting lines, I am interested in observing the power of the changing growing shape. This dynamic shape becomes an entity in itself, "Another geography." In a sense, the empty space is myself, and the materials represent the present world. Cutting book work is like collaboration for me. And it is important to choose the materials carefully because printed matter conveys a message automatically. The relationship between the linear actions and the materials is like the relationship between human beings and their restricted environment, a connection that is interested in me, too.”
