Expressive Explorations 11/07/2010
I was delighted to receive an email by artist Eliza Frye introducing me to her work which captivated me right from the start! Her fragile, yet expressive and poetic figures draw you into their mysterious worlds. Lovely use of bold and vibrant colors and a very interesting experimentation with negative space! As I read in her official site: “The artist has studied Character Animation at California Institute of the Arts, holds a BA in Japanese Literature from UCLA and is currently working on her MFA in Creative Writing at Calarts. She also owns Miss Scarlet in the Parlor, an art gallery in Echo Park and teaches animation at Inner-City Arts through Calarts' Community Arts Partnership.” Don’t forget to take a look at Eliza Frye’s online shop for an inspiring collection of both prints and original art! ![]() Simply breathtaking watercolor illustrations by Catherine Parr who is currently living and creating in Los Angeles. I am thrilled by her color combinations and the way the soft lines of pencil show beneath colored areas. Her fashion inspired characters are whimsical and sophisticated. As the artist notes: “For me, inspiration comes from many places. Ealing Studios, French and Italian Cinema, along with music, theatre and dance.” Check out her online shop at etsy for gorgeous prints. Illustrating Inspiration 08/11/2010
I was very excited when I discovered the work of Andrew Archer. I love the textures, color palette and sense of constant motion in his work, along with his excellent skills in illustrating bold, imaginative and original images. I quote from the artist’s statement: “I’m greatly inspired by surrealism, juxtapositions and sublime narratives but more specifically wood block prints, edo period art, cartoons, ideograms, characterization, travel and Asia. Through my work I’ve been lucky enough to work within a range of super cool mediums including editorials, advertising, web, moving picture, storyboards and more and continue to do so.” Wonder Creatures 07/12/2010
The work of Sabi Van Hemert, a Dutch artist certainly doesn’t remain unnoticed! Strange creatures, a fusion between child and alien, these surreal sculptures provoke a variety of emotions to the viewer due to both their originality and directness. “For weeks, with great patience and discipline, I cut, paste or prick, following self-imposed rules such as, “all forms in the same rhythm” or “all lines continue onward”. This precision, and the particular materials I choose, help to give my work its alienating yet sensual, tough yet vulnerable character.” Pop Universe 06/22/2010
![]() Joe Van Wetering explores the world of color and forms by creating visuals filled with energy. There is an inspiring balance that I appreciate in his works. As I read in the artist’s site: “Inspired by the contrasting visions of pop culture and nature, Joe explores the continuously developing relationship between color and space, creating abstract visions of everyday life through his artwork”. ![]() Lena Wolff is a mixed media artist who creates beautiful, textured and layered images inspired mainly by the natural world. “As an artist I'm informed by an interest in folk art, anthropomorphic fables, allegory, organic abstraction and veneration for the natural world. Working with mixed mediums on paper, I draw from philosophies of the Arts and Crafts Movement and the re-contextualization of textile traditions as much as by contemporary drawing and painting practice. Using paper-cut, collage and pinpricks on paper, I work to construct textured and layered images that appear otherworldly and fantastic.” .
