In the case of Juan Osborne’s artwork, the famous saying “A picture is worth a thousand words” is visualized through his illustrations!

I got an email from the artist, introducing me to the design technique he uses for creating portraits as well as representations of paintings: “As first step I usually count words of books, speeches, movies, etc... With the results I recreate images using the words in size proportional to the repetitions. The more times the word is used the bigger it is. Other times I just use words related to the subjet and spread it over the image. The final image is a resolution independent pdf image that can be fit in high size panels or even in a wall or facade.”

I’m always delighted when I receive emails from artists who want to introduce me to their work. But Phresha’s vibrant paintings are a true eye candy I had to share. Fresh, bold, seductive, her female characters seem to draw you in with their dark – sometimes surreal charm.

Phresha’s style is clearly inspired by graffiti aesthetics but has already a distinctive touch and personality.

I love her color palette and the inspiring way she blows life into her characters.

The artist was born in 1981 in Romania. She has finished her studies in the field of graphic design and advertising and currently lives and creates in Vancouver BC.

Her clientele includes MTV, Vans Shoes and more.

I was deeply drawn in when I first set my eyes on Kate MacDowell’s phenomenal work! So surreal and fresh, delicate yet dark – natural yet distorted. The detail in her creations is simply amazing and the symbolic visual language used very powerful!

I quote from her online bio: “I’ve lived and worked in many different environments and cultures that have influenced the way I perceive the world, and therefore my pieces. These experiences have ranged from teaching in urban high schools and producing websites in the high-tech corporate environment, to volunteering at a meditation retreat center in rural India a few hours outside of the fever pitch of Bombay. I’ve also collected visual imagery and ideas from my travels through Renaissance Italy, Classical and Minoan Greece, Nepal and Thailand.”

After the idea is envisioned, the artist transforms delicate porcelain into natural forms by hand and creates wonderfully rendered pieces that look like they can come into life within any second.

Pure inspiration.

I was thrilled when I received an email from Andrew Smith introducing me to his mind blowing artwork! Old and abandoned items such as gears, wires, springs, junk yard scraps and all sort of mechanical parts & equipment are ritually collected by the artist and used to assemble imaginative and captivating kinetic sculptures.

As the artist notes: “Rather than getting melted down and recycled or going to a landfill, the junk becomes new, gets a new purpose, a new life”.

Also worth mentioning is that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Museum in Alexandria, Virginia showcased Andrew Smith’s “Driving Force” in an exhibition entitled “Art of Invention: Invention of Art”.

The only sure thing about Smith’s work is that it wakes your inner child. You can feel the positive energy and pureness of his creations – reflecting the natural instinct of curiosity. How many of us have destroyed our toys in order to see what they’re made of?

Anna-Wili Highfield is undoubtedly entering the top list of my favorite artists. Her paper creatures are like poems, they’re so visually attractive, you can definitely feel the magic!

Anna is based in Sydney and makes animal sculptures from paper and copper pipe. Her figures require both her artistic vision and a definitely challenging procedure in means of craft and technique.

Here is this month’s favorite artist : Walton Ford

Also known as ‘Nature Boy’, Ford is an artist that stands out from today’s tendencies in art. No extreme means, no hidden concepts, no shocking themes –well, at least not with a first glance. Take a note of this:

“Blending depictions of natural history with political commentary, Ford’s meticulous paintings satirize the history of colonialism and the continuing impact of slavery and other forms of political oppression on today’s social and environmental landscape. Each painting is as much a tutorial in flora and fauna as it is as a scathing indictment of the wrongs committed by nineteenth-century industrialists or, locating the work in the present, contemporary American consumer society.”

Inspired by stories of passionate explorers, natural history museums, wild animals and the taxidermy technique, Ford’s art is far from being taken for decorative. Although he has a mania for verisimilitude his paintings consist unusual combinations of animal coexistence and always a very interesting composition of the theme.

“Walton lives and works far away from the art centers. When he first moved to Great Barrington, he wondered if being away from New York would keep him from becoming a famous artist. But it has worked out. Paul Kasmin is selling his canvases for more money than he ever dreamed possible. Now he's the resident art star of the town.”
