EyeCandies among 17 fashion bloggers from Greece had the great pleasure to be invited by Buldoza.gr and participate in the 1st Fashion Business Forum that took place on the 17th of January 2011 in the centre of Athens and was organized by Boussias Conferences. The elegant interiors of Hotel Grande Bretagne welcomed fashion people in the fields of marketing, economy, public relations, business management and advertising in order to participate in a conference that hosted speakers of great influence and experience in the global fashion scene.
Picture
The main aims of the forum were focused on the sub-theme of the forum “Get your shoppers back” and also discussed related issues such as:
  • the financial crisis in Greece,
  • the economical situation and possible solutions,
  • sales procedures, advantages and disadvantages of the Greek fashion model and the eventual feedback aid,
  • the use of media and internet in advertising and online fashion business.
Fashion blogs were mentioned many times during the discussions as the key source for essential publicity valuable to online fashion companies. We were positioned as opinion makers, a fact that is very flattering and rewarding concerning our blogging occupation.
Picture
Yannis Tseklenis
Greek legend of fashion Mr. Yannis Tseklenis gave a valuable speech conveying his deep knowledge, great passion and experience in fashion. He shared his perspicacious views on Greek fashion and its evolution & history during the past decades. By outlining the situation of fashion in Greece he emphasized on the advantages and disadvantages of Greek companies both in the past and in the present:
  • Improper use of high quality equipment
  • Lack of knowledge and limits in imagination,
  • Collections and products copying habits
  • Lack of local absorption in Greece
  • Prospective times of Greek fashion business during the 70s and 80s.
He noted that Greek fashion should adopt its Greek element and embody this fashion DNA in techniques, designs and production.

Mr Tseklenis significantly explained many important issues and fashion notions like the proper meaning of the word fason being price-taken quality. As a great supporter of Greek companies and designers, Mr Tseklenis highlighted his pride for Greek designers that have entered the worldwide fashion stage and mentioned Sophia Kokosalaki, Maria Katrantzou, Yiorgos Eleftheriades, Angelos Bratis and many more. He concluded his speech with the hope for a great change and a different direction in Greek fashion, a better future. Knowledge is the key to overcome ignorance.
Picture
William Plane
William Plane, with the experience of economics in the field of fashion & luxury (being the business mind of Burberry, a Savigny Partner and Founder of UBS Warburg, attempted to answer a puzzling question: “Is the luxury fashion business broken?” He stated that the Fast Fashion Business Model is a great success for many brands. Mr.Plane presented many aspects of revitalising the fashion business model, as well as a prognosis for the future in menswear collections and the internet as the leading keys.
Picture
Pascal Bollon
Pascal Bollon, Global Fashion Director at GfK Retail & Technology, analyzed the idea of “Power to the people means power to the brand” by underlying two crucial points in fashion: constants and changes and possible actions.
Picture
Colin McDowell
Colin McDowell, one of the greatest top fashion commentators and the founder of Fashion Fringe was undeniably the favourite speaker among fashion bloggers not only for his brilliantly witted speech, but also for his insightful knowledge, long term experience, and great commitment to the fashion industry. For the subject: “Is fashion relevant to Today’s Consumer” he mentioned the importance of youth in the fashion scene and the fact that fashion should not be thought as a privilege of the rich. He spoke about fashion making various points such as the obligation of a dress code nowadays, shopping as a personal experience, as well as his own relations with high-end fashion designers and fashion people. His whole speech was interlinked with his great personal sense of humour. We managed to record small snapshot of his superb speech (a Big sorry for the less professional quality of the video, but in this case quantity was more important):

Colin McDowel on 1st Fashion Business Forum in Athens from Magda Lena on Vimeo.

Picture
Leon Bailey Green
Leon Bailey Green as the specialist on online retail and Founder of the Online Fashion Agency and the Online Fashion 100 presented “Online Fashion Business” and made reference to internet retailing giants such as ASOS, secretsales.com, stylistpick.com, farfetch.com, and many more. By outlining key notions like E-commerce, system, fulfilment, customer service, content, merchandising and marketing, he intelligently dismantled and analyzed the structure of the fashion business model that every online shop should be aware of.
Picture
Tim Jackson
Tim Jackson - Principal Lecturer at the London College of Fashion specialising in luxury brand management and marketing and awarded with The Best Journalist 2010 title talked about “Virtual Flagships – an evolution in luxury brand communication?“and managed to outline the slippery border between fashion & luxury by cleverly manoeuvring between examples of:
  • fashion culture history, fashion illustrations, first iconic fashion designers, real couture,
  • design agendas and heritage of designers with a significant record in the fashion scene,
  • characteristics of trends, high street fashion,
  • fundamental changes of media that leads to new creativity like digital flagships, designers’ websites, the use of social media, virtual fashion shows,
  • mass market – high fashion collaborations with giant retails and trick publicity with celebrities.
Apart from the lectures of international and keynote speakers and discussion panels on the Forum, the presentations of new online shops hitting the market also took place:
  • buldoza.gr was our generous initiator of fashion blogs invitations for the Forum. Setting up the company was both a challenging and rewarding step because of appropriate tactics such as lower prices, fast delivery and no stock policy. The site is structured in a simple and clear manner with all the essential information and details. Social Media and especially fashion blogs are the key source for publicity, opinion making and free of charge consultation.
  • fashinating.com hosts thousands of fashion products from the best online stores, allowing users to find their own unique style.
  • brandsGalaxy is based on the idea of Private Shopping by becoming a member of a club.

Buldoza.gr team
To sum up, EyeCandies attendance in the 1st Fashion Business Forum was a new and exciting experience for the blog. The significant speeches of Mr.Tseklenis gave a chance for deeper reflection. Fashion observers participating in the event were familiar with some of the contents, and this leaded to a slight feeling of hunger for more innovative information. Nevertheless it was a great experience being there, having the chance to meet other fashion bloggers and listen to the experts!

The phrase , "Is fashion relevant to today's consumer" said by Colin McDowel is a great question. These days people are more about how much something is on sale than what they are actually buying. I still believe it is relevant just not as important as it used to be. I do feel people seem to venture out in their own direction because of the economy and someone can only buy what they can afford but I think that makes them an individual. Fashion will always be a part of a persons life just not as important as it used to be. There are just higher priorities in the average mans life.
