Eva Topalidou is the founder and editor of the Rdeco Blog, a civil engineer, an interior design consultant and a manic collector. Today she shares her views on creative blogging, talks about her passion for anything creative and gives us a glimpse of her freshly decorated apartment! Enjoy!

Hello Eva and welcome to EyeCandies! First of all, can you tell us what fueled your passion for decoration initially?

To be honest, I don’t really know! I was always sketching, painting along with a passion for industrial design and buildings in general. Since I was a kid I was sure that I will be a civil engineer.

Your Rdeco Blog is one of the most popular decoration blogs in Greece. When and how did you start? What inspires you in blogging?

I started accidentally. I had one of the first Internet connections in Greece, I am in here from the beginning. Back in 2007 I found Holly Becker, she was a beginner also at that time and I was inspired immediately. After that I realized that blogging, I can’t have enough! Anything can be a post. Experienced bloggers are aware of that. I say: “Anything is blogable”. I am inspired mostly from nice photos and of course from my readers that are waiting for new posts.

What would you advice a new blogger?

Well, I could talk for hours about blogging, but I think that the most appropriate advice is “just be you”. I know it sounds as a cliché but it’s true. Once somebody finds the way to express himself the road is open.

We are presenting some photos of your wonderfully decorated apartment. Tell us about your choices and your decorating style.

The most psycho situation is for an interior designer to choose his home. I am a collector all my life. I am a flea market person and love this style. Reclaimed design is my choice for a beautiful living among a tone of collections. I love to find old stuff in garbage and believe me, I keep my eyes open all day.

As for my apartment I can never be happy to the bone, I could find every day a reason to change it.

Is there a special object in your house that you treasure? A favorite ornament for example or something like that.

Well, there are hundreds of objects that I love. I am an “object person” but I can’t stop loving my deer head that I bought from the lovely Etsy seller Ruby and of course my kitchen aid machine.

You also work as a civil engineer and you organize an interior design workshop. What should one take into consideration when decorating their house. Can you share some tips?

Being a civil engineer protects me from fatal mistakes in functional issues. Take always good care of you free zones at home. You should be able to walk -even dance if you like- in comfort. Nothing should be in your way. Beside that I have a few:

- Don’t rush into buying something, think twice. If you’re still in love with it after 1 week, then buy it.

- Don’t buy sets of furniture. There is nothing more cold that a house where everything is paired or matched by somebody else than you. This is also for designers stuff.

- Leave your home to show you the way. It is alive. Space will talk to you if you have your heart open.

Who are your favorite designers / decorators / architects?

I love the Greek Aris Konstantinidis, an architect that is world wide known. He was a revolutionist. Mies van de Rohe and Le Corbusier are two more that are unforgettable. From the contemporary designers, Harry Allen is a designer who makes such beautiful objects, Thomas Adler creates lovely stuff and every day people with imagination also. I love every day design, or design that is created to serve a need. Ah! I could talk for hours for this subject, I mean does anybody know who designed the Greek tins we use to keep feta cheese and olives and they become plant pots afterwards?

What can we find you doing when not blogging and working?

I am always working. Anyhow if not I love to cheat some time by the sea with tsipouro and meze dressed up with long conversations with good friends.

Your plans for 2011?

I plan something for 2011, which has to do with blogging and decorating. I like to let you know that I am a proud member of Startegy team that wants to help and support new entrepreneurs. You can find more information in our site. I also plan to buy some de gournay wallpaper  :)

Lastly, is there anything else you’d wish to add?

I like to add that is a pleasant surprise to see that more Greek deco bloggers are on air now and knowing that is a hard job I say: keep calm and blog!

Thank you Eva for participating in the EyeCandies Blog! It is a pleasure having you here!

Thank you too for having me in your wonderful blog. I respect art and artists.
